Sticky Tach

Hi Guys,

I just got an '89 40 HP Johnson VRO complete with control box and instrumentation and have a bit of a problem with the tachometer; it does not read below 3000RPM, when I opened the unit to see if it was down to a jumped tooth I noticed that the unit seems to be gear less and operated with a sort of electric motor of sorts.

On spinning the needle around this does not stop but continues to rotate freely to come to a stop at 3000 RPM.

Any ideas to the cause/solution?

Thanks

Re: Sticky Tach

Can I replace with an off the shelf item? Is it a universal plug & play system?

Don't know what the tach end of your deal looks like, but its only three or four wires. Make sure you get an outboard tach that's suitable for your motor. Nothing universal about them.

Re: Sticky Tach

if it says "marine" and/or "outboard", and has a "6p" setting on the selector dial, and posts marked IGN, SND, LT, and GND, then it'll work. The posts might be labelled differently (but I doubt it).
