stiff action on throttle

I've got a '00 Mercury 90hp ELPT 2 stroke. s/n ot087666 built in '99.
The shift throttle has always had a lot friction in it. Seems like
its getting worse. I don't know if the problem is in the shift handle
mechanism or due to tight turns of the cable going under the deck and coming to the get to the
motor. So I'm going to disconnect the cable to figure it out. My question is
regarding the throttle mechanism. Are there any tricky springs or levers
that might hop apart when I get into it or is it straightforward not tricky?

Any ideas on what might be the root cause of this stiff action would be appreciated too.

I have a friend who has the same shift mechanism on his bass boat to a 200hp merc and its loose as a goose.
Its the console mount not the side mount.

Disconnect the throttle cable at the motor end and see if it moves easier. If it does, then move the throttle on the motor to see if it's stiff.

My best guess is the 20 year old internal cable lining is worn and needs replacing. Shift cable is probably on the way out, too.

Some remotes have a friction adjustment. Which remote control do you have?

this is not my actual throttle but it looks just like this on a kenner center console.. I did not realize how many different designs there are.
