After mounting my outboard on my new boat i started to tinker with my helm. Before i even ran the control cables I noticed the helm was tight. It will turn left and right fully in either direction but it is stiff and you gotta use so muscle . Are there any tricks to freeing it up.....It is a rack and pinion style. any suggestion would be helpful.

replace the cable or the helm. go with rotary nofeedback system. easier to install.

Re: Stiff Helm repair question>>>

Also disconnect the steering where the cable attaches to the rod at the motor
Then check the steering at the helm
In my case, the steering cable, helm, etc was fine
The problem I had was at the kingpin on the motor was tight
