I've taken apart the helm control for relocation purposes and figured I'd try to lube things up while in there. With the throttle and shift unhooked from the engine, it's still pretty stiff going through the ranges. Is there an effective way to lube the shift/throttle cables?
And can one lube the lower shift cable? Replacements look to be around $300 for my old OMC... Ouch..

Shifting at the box without the remote cable hooked up is a bit stiff to. With engine off anyway, I haven't tried it while running yet. Everything I can see looks to have lots of grease, it just looks old and starting to dry up.

When a shift cable starts getting old, and from your discription, it sounds like yours is, you really do need to go ahead and replace the cable. When your cables starts binding it's from wear, not lack of lubrication. A binding cable puts added stress on all the other components of the shift system as well, causing more wear to those many moving parts.

I'm so glad you took the time out of your busy day to waste time giving a typical of you 1 liner, worthless post.
Your insite is priceless.
For someone with so much information to offer, you sure act like an @ss.

Bond-O was stating fact....If you didn't like the answer you could take the boat to a real mechanic.I'm sure they would tell you the same thing.
300 bucks for cables to save trying to find another drive...money well spent!

The lower shift cable is around 100 bucks alone and they do need replaced every few years.
Just the lower gear set is around 1k.....I think the cables are a small price to pay.
And if the new cables are not adjusted EXACTLY to spec in the OMC service manual the gears will be toast anyway....

Bond-o replies to nearly every topic on here with his knowledgable advice. That means 1-liners are pretty much the limit if someone wants to sleep, too. What he said tells you A: you need a new cable, not a cheap fix and B: what happens if you try a cheap fix instead of a new cable. All in that one-liner. Don't get bent out of shape because your idea, bourne out of ignorance, was a bad one.

If you two want to fight and call each other names, do it in PM's, not on the forums.
