1996 BigFoot 50Hp Fourstroke:

Since the day I purchased my pontoon boat the steering is stiff and the shifter is hard to move. (Camparing to to my neighbors) This year I intend to fix both issues with your help !

1. I never tried to fix the shifter issue but I thought there was some type of
drag adjustment under the handle. (Console Mount) How to you adjust the
drag or should I be looking at something else ?

2. I have messed with the stiff steering for a couple of years with no fix to date.
a. No Sharp bends in cable.
b. Disconnected the steering linkage from the cable on the motor.
Wheel moves with no drag and the motor moves freely.
c. In my investigation I noticed the ball joint on the arm that connects
the cable to the motor is almost impossable to move. I tried working
it with WD40 in a vise but it never freed up. Was convinced I had a
bad link and purchased a new one on EBAY but when it arrived
it as just as stiff as the original. After installing the new steering link
there was no change.

Is the ball socket on the link supposed to move free ? My neighbor has a older merc 50HP on his boat and the ball moves very free. I cannot move the ball with my hands at all, it requires putting a screwdriver in the center and with much force pushing on it. When I work the ball with the screwdriver it actually gets quite hot ! Did mercury have an issue with this linkage and somebody get the bad parts and sell them on Ebay maybe ?? Any help would be appreciated !

Thanks

On the right side of the outboard is a lock down screw that is used to adjust the steering friction. Make sure it is not too tight. Also have you grease all of the steering related components? There are grease zerks on the main pivot of the outboard.

1. I have greased all the zerks.
2. I will look for the friction adjuster but wouldn't it be stiff with the sterring link removed also ? (It wasn't stiff with the link removed)

I would say you bought a bad ball joint off ebay. If it is getting hot when you move it around with a screw driver friction is building up heat not good. Is the ball rusty looking? Try spraying some lube oil on it as you move it around that might free it up smear some grease on the ball as you pivot it

i think you just have a bad adapter, make sure it's the right one for the engine. it should move freely. on the shifter, go to mercurypartsexpress.com, accessories, see if you can find a diagram, or maybe the local dealer will let you take a look. is it a Merc shifter of aftermarket the boat mfgr used.

How is the steering with the link removed?

I already tried working the ball loose on both the original and new one by running a bolt thru the socket with a nut and then attaching a drill to it. Also have use WD40, Grease, Oil, and lithium grease. A new rod costs close to $ 200 and is non returnable (Special Order) so does anyone out there have a 50HP Four Stroke set-up that could cjeck how tight the ball is ?

Thanks
