I think I found the cause of my stiff steering almost by mistake.
I was sitting at the helm and looking at the wheel and noticed the cap in the middle of the wheel looked lose. So I popped it and saw that it was full of water and the nut was corroded andand the area was full of rust flakes.
I think this might have seeped down into the steering housing.

Now i plan to spray the area with oil and see if i can get the nut off or at least lub the stuff under there.
Any ideas on what to do?

what type helm do you have? may be best to just replace.

its the one that came with the boat most likely. Its a 1975 Mako.
I agree about just changing it out.
