Stiff steering on merc 60

HI there today i ran up the merc for the first time in about 2 months and the steering was ever so stiff you had to get inside the boat to steer it. I think either the cables are correded or rusted but i also think you might have to lube the actully steering bar but i am n ot sure how..
any ideas???

What steering system are you using ? Teleflex Safe-T ? How cold has it been? At the very least I would lubricate the cable with Quicksilver 2-4-C grease at the tilt tube, better yet pull the cable and replace.

You may have a couple of grease zerks on either side and on the front of the swivel tube.
With the steering to one side so as to fully extend the rod out of the tube - is it shiny or muddy?
