Ok..if this is not in the right section let me know and I'll get it where it needs to be..

Have a 1995 Regal 202 SE..Mercruiser 4.3 LX..Bought the boat and steering was stiff then but thought that it was something that we could handle ourselves...Power steering fluid was low so filled it up to proper level took it out on water and steering was still stiff..

Have been reading a bunch of post of what other people have done to fix the problem since adding fluid didn't fix it..I found a post where someone made a cleaning device to put seafoam in it and use an air compressor to forces clean the steering cable..My question is I very new to boats and need to know...Where do I disconnect the line back at the engine...I know to take it off under the dash and follow it back but do i disconnect at the first part where I can or is there a different disconnect..If someone could take a pic of where it is that would be very helpful..

Also what do you look for or listen for on the power steering pump..I Hooked up the muffs started engine let it run and turn back and forth to make sure all belts were on and ok..

Sorry so long but wanted to give as much info as i could cause I know its easier to answer with more info...

Thanks in advance..

Re: Stiff Steering

The Mercruiser steering cables corrode into the tubes. trace the steering cable back to the motor. See where it is attached to the transom shield with a moveable joint. Disconnect the from the transom shield and the sterndrive pivot. See if you can unscrew the tube from the cable. If so, pull it off and clean the stainless steel cable end and the tube. Sometimes you gotta heat 'em with a propane torch to get them off.

Merc makes "Special Lube 101" just for lubing the steering cables.
