Hello , i have a 2003 bayliner 175 with the 3.0 mercury inboard . My issue is the steering is very syiff, i just want to go ahead and change the whole thing it looks pretty simple but i want to know is ot ok to grease up the rod in the back? Or is that a no no? Maybe thats whats making it hard to steer ? Because in the beginning the rod had Hard like baked on grease and maybe thats what was causing the friction.. so i cleaned it all up and put a lot of new all putpose grease ?

Hey bud, i also heard i can disconnect it from the back and see if the steering is better.. i did , and the steering was a little better , but not like "butter" like some said it should be? After unhooking the cable from the back , I did move the drive from outside and it moves with one hand , but to the left it makes a rubber friction squeege noise ? Is that normal ?

I did what u said, and it steers fine with 2 fingers or even 1 but harder unhooked, but once hooked its hard ? How easy is the outdrive supposed to move ? And how far to each side ?

Its your cable. Grease the outdrive and either replace or try lubing the cable. Just like the other forum you posted to and these helpful guys are telling ya.
