1976 85hp johnson. No power. No 1 cyl not "firing" Cleaned carbs., changed power pack with a used one from a dealer. Spark using spark tester real good. compression on all cyl. right at 145. Tried it out today--crappy. came home and did spark test again--good. Cranked it up at idle and pulled the wire on each cyl while at idle. Only on no. 1--no difference. How and what can I do next? I've been reading the other posts hoping to get some info.
Thanks

ted :(

Re: Still Baffled

Went and shot some premix into the baffles of no 1 cyl and idle picked up. Took off screws of jets on carb and blew air into them forcing gas to come out the front of carb. Put back screws and cranked. Pulled plug wire on no. 1 and noticed a difference. Did the same with the other three--same result. Maybe this solved my problem--will have to go and run in lake.

Sounds to me like that top carb isn't as clean as you think it is. Tear it down again and give it a good soaking, couple of hours, in carb cleaner. Rinse it with aerosol carb cleaner and blow it out with compressed air. Pay particular attenetion to all jets, small orifices and passageways. There are jets in the bowls too.

Re: Still Baffled

Just found that my gas tank is cracked. Could this cause some of my problem?

Took off the carbs and did another real-good cleaning. Put them back on and will try it out again tomorrow. Also patched my gas tank with fiberglass.

Re: Still Baffled

When you have it running next time, take a timing light with you and see if you still got spark on #1. You may have a problem with the timer base.

Re: Still Baffled

Took off both carbs and did a good soak and blew out all passages. Also, purchased an in-line filter--great decision. When I pumped-up the pressure, the trash that I saw was shocking. Went and ran the boat and it ran really good. Shot out of the hole real good. RPM's still not getting to 5000 or more. Maybe tach isn't right? Guess I shouldn't be looking for more? Thanks for the suggestions.
