I want to thank everyone that gave me their advice on fixing my omc 800.I really thought the backwards cables was the answer, but now when I push the control forward it points to forward on the. Indicator on sterndrive but it goes in reverse and vice versa put in reverse it goes forward, now the guy I bought it from said he replaced the sterndrive could he have put something in wrong,?I don't know anybody have any words of wisdom

Those cables only go in the converter box 1 way as the pucks at the ends of the cables are different sizes. It could be that that the lower unit is an earlier model than the boat with hydro shift. Or the other way. If it works and does not slip just re-connect the cables in the control box.
The hydro shift models were basically outboard lower units which were the first 78 models if my memory is correct.
