Re: Still Boating ?

I had to ask that question, because in this part of the country(OHIO) everyone seams to be done for the year. I knew there had to be at least one more good day left.... Today was wonderful, it was 80 degrees, sunny, our boat was still in the water so we said why not. I always hate to say the season is over, I got up this morning, asked the misses if she would like to go out for dinner....no surprise there. This afternoon we got in the car, half way to the marina she figured out where we were going. We got there, started the engines, untied and off we went. Here it was the end of October, and we were cruising down the river like it was July. We took a 25 mile trip to a floating restaurant, docked the boat, had a wonderful dinner, and cruised home in the moonlight. I am so glad we waited to pull the boat and winterize it. This was one of the best "trips" we have had all year.....almost NOVEMBER !!

Well, I never what you say, "winterize", I keep my tank full because sometime between now and March, I will take a trip somewhere and besides that, I do a little trout fishing during the winter, so I just can't see the extra cost of the job to winterize.

I just make sure to drain my engine good of water and back it in the garage and turn the heat on to keep it toastie.

Well, I'm with you guys, yesterday was 70 deg here. My big boat is out of the water, winterized cause it freezes here and if we are lucky we get to go ice fishing on longpoint bay. I have a little fishing boat still in the water in the boat house and it will stay there till freeze up. If it doesnt freeze up i'll be fishing on nice days. :D

Re: Still Boating ?

Funny thing..I live down here where the water stays liquid year-round, but I still wont be boating this winter, at least, not from my tubs -- just as last winter. I sold my runaboat, and now only have the 12Footer. I've just completed resetting the rivetts and repainting her, but I can hear slack in the crankshaft (a lot of slack),in the Merc 7.5HP..
So it looks like repower time (Ka-Ching!).
The project boat is still covered, and it looks like I wont complete it until late spring, and even later if I decide to repower it too. It has an old Force50HP with a bad CD pack.
sigh.
I'm not too broken up about it tho, as Mrs12 has developed a 'jones' for deep sea fishing. A trip out on a head boat is allmost effortless, so we are ready at the drop of a hat.
The local boats are really nice, the prices are fair, and thier captains are good.

Had a great time in the boat yesterday in Cedar Bayou. It was 87 degrees and very sunny. Boat ran great, tried to fish but nothing was biting, and the bay was way too rough. This was only my thrid trip out this year, been way too busy.

Ken

Our boat stays in the slip under the house year round, just drop it down and go. No need to winterize here.

Alright. You guys in the south stink! :D :D I guess living down there does have it's advantages, but how many times a year do you have snowball fights, or go sledding? :p

Myself, I am still boating (and skiing) here. Going to try to get out this afternoon before I take my son out for Halloween. Should be a high about 48 today. We (myself and some other hardcore wackos) ski until there is ice on the lakes, and then we usually head to the Mississippi once per month over the winter.

Around here all the state ramps are "closed".So we launch for free. This is the time of year to go out pike fishing and until the water on the smaller lakes gets hard we will be in there.I have a small aluminum 12 footer that I use in deep winter on lake Ontario, just by the outlet of a power station. Many a steelhead was caught off that boat.

Re: Still Boating ?

There have been a few decent days lately, but I have been working. When I have not been working, the days have not been pleasant. I am looking out my window at the light skim of snow on the hills near my house, the 30 something degrees on the thermo, and that whole wind thing and being on the lake doesn't sound fun. Naw, unless a freak decent day come, I'm done til April 05... :(

Hey,who's boasting, Sanger? It's not as great as it may sound to live here. Three hurricanes have left thier mark. The summers here in the "sunshine state" are nothing short of brutal. The state bird, in realitiy, should be the salt marsh mosquito.
A fishing trip in the Imperial or Calloosahatcheee Rivers in June-thru-October requires a transfusion after cleaning the boat and the fish.
I guess boating on ice aint too easy, but it can't be to rough to sit around a toasty fire with the better half, whilst sipping the beverage of your choice. :D

Re: Still Boating ?

Sorry 12Footer. Wasn't making any accusations, just razzing y'all a bit. Everyplace has it's problems. We may not get hurricanes here, but we usually get our share of snow. For some, that's enough reason not to live here.

BTW-I think our state bird should be a mosquito, too! :D :D

We go boatin' year round here too. Actually it's nicer in the winter than in the Summer cuz it's not so hot. We'll have highs in the 70's to 80's til May.

will have the boat out on the river again starting later this month for steelhead, and will be up in puget sound later this month for blackmouth as well.

Still guiding kayak tours on the columbia river, but tomorrow will be the last day of that this year. I will go out a few times over the winter just to stay in shape though.

Re: Still Boating ?

I was out today. I was the only one on the lake the entire day. It was great.
A bit windy & cold but I managed to get out the wind & it was nice.
I may go again Tuesday if it doesn't rain. It's supposed to be around 51 degrees.
I guess I'll be hitting the lakes as much as I can before the big freeze comes in.

On a side note, I managed to get a nice walleye. First one of the year.
I was actually fishing for crappie but this little guy came along & made my day .... (and will make my dinner tommorow night ;) )
