Still have idle adjustment issues

Okay, I think I'm officially at my wit's end.

Just to refresh your memories - '87 15hp. Trying to set the cable off the remote to set idle. I have no more turns left on the trunion. And to go down the list:

Freshly cleaned out exhaust tube
New rings
Carb rebuild
New charge coil
Link and sync
Fuel pump rebuild
New throttle cable

I can get it down to about 600rpm if I "fast idle" on the remote just a nudge. It stalls out at about 500 or so dead centered in neutral. If I had about three more turns on the trunion I'd probably be fine.

I'm ready to pull my hair out on this one.

I sure wish I could help. You're falling off the board. Are you running in a tank or on a hose?

don't you have and idle stop screw, it stops the linkage from going lower, even though the cable does.

Idle speed is NOT set by adjusting the cable. Disconnect the throttle cable and adjust idle speed with the idle stop screw. Then bring the cable end up to the linkage and adjust the trunion so the two attachment points line up exactly. Idle speed needs to be set with the engine in the water. If you have a manual, follow the link&sync procedure to the letter.

Re: Still have idle adjustment issues

There is no idle stop screw on a '87. It's adjusted by the cable as per the Evinrude manual.

For the time being, I've drilled and tapped a nub on the block to create an idle stop screw w/ a jam nut. Runs and idles like a top now. Still, that just can't be the right way to do it. I've scoured the Evinrude manual for any hints, and gone over ever procedure several times. Same deal every time.

I guess I'll live with the work-around unless someone has a better idea.

OK -- let's try "idle timing" screw.

don't want to waste your time, but, if you have time to indulge my curiousity, I'd like to see a pic of your engineering...just for grins, sort of.......

Re: Still have idle adjustment issues

Again, there isn't one. At least not one mentioned in the manual or that I can find.

The only adjustment in the link and sync is the cam follower adjustment, which is dead on.

Idle speed adjustment is achieved through the cable adjustment on the tiller handle, or through cable adjustment on the remote.
