okay, after replacing the thermostat, risers, water cirlulator, the manifolds cleaned and inspected, new plugs, oil change, i think i only have one thing left, the impeller. and that was changed at the begining of the season (although i did hit some muck a while back.) ran the motor at the slip for an hour after doing all this work with no overheat problem, stayed about 150 degrees. got it up to just below 180 at 3500 rpms for a couple of minutes, backed it down to idle and temp went back down. took it out for a cruise and them was good till i throttled up to cruise, took about 4 minutes at 3500 rpms and it reached about 200 degrees, throttled back to idle and temp went down almost immediatly back to about 170. is the impeller not keeping up with the engine rpm while in gear? i'm lost. if thats my problem, that would be great. the good news is it dosen't backfire anymore and runs great with platinum plugs! HELP!!!!!

Hotmerc have you inspected to cooling hose that goes from the outdrive thru the gimbal bracket, Its the small hose about 1.25" they will crack over time so when you get up on plane and run higher rpm the water pressure will increase at this hose and leak out at this hose before it reaches the motor..causing less water volume to reach the motor...or you may have a blockage.

Northern Eclipse took the words right outa my mouth.

Check that hose out and if it looks beautiful, check the clamp that holds it in place. It may look like it's there but may be broken.

Water will go thru fine at low RPM's but forget it at high RPM, the water will just blast out the end of the hose around the tubing it is slid over..

Let us know how you make out..

well, after speaking with a mechanic at the marina we found out the cavity in the outdrive was all full of barnicles, its been a bad season... since we had it apart we changed the impeller too. temp doesn't go above 150 degrees in cruise mode!
