Pressure plate no scores . Is that plate all that seperates the oil from bottom?1 of the ports or the two had more resistance but I could blow through easily. I have fished out lines housing looks perfect. Any ideas. I am going to take it apart again tomorrow morning and compress air throughout. all so does gear have to be in neutreul to put in bolt for shift rod. Would oil from below into housing cause impeller to not work???

The drive shaft seal keeps the oil in the bottom.

Any gear, just look in there to be sure the notch is perfectly aligned with the bolt hole.

"mild pissing", huh? What is that supposed to mean? It is only supposed to put out a spray, and that varies according to the thermostat position at the moment.

It appears to be mild pissing. When it is low rpm, the spray is barely visible and when I cup my hand there is some water. Maybe I am overreacting and this particular engine doesn't put out much water. Back to my question regarding gear oil spilling out under wear plate into the impeller housing. Is that normal? Or does that just spill out when you lay the unit on side. The o ring at top of shaft has nicks but I can't seen what that would do unless it is and air suction issue. Let me know what else or don't panic. I have a difficult time seeing into the hole to allign the gear rod but that is the least of problems. I just want to make sure I haven't missed anything and the impeller is working. Is there a thermostat on this motor and does it have to warm a bit before pumping? Thanks, its nearly impossible to find someone that has this motor or who is old enough to have a clue......

A spray is normal. The thermostat is constantly samplng the temperture and opening or closing as necessary to maintain proper temperature. It will stay closed much of the time at slow idle. When it is closed, the water returns down the second pipe to the water pump for recirculation. Only a small bypass is discharged under that situation.

Are you running it on a boat on the lake or in a bucket? Get it the heck out of the bucket if you are, and out on the lake where it belongs. Then report back if it isn't cooling.

There should be no oil leaking out of the lower unit.

The o-ring on the drive shaft should not be split or dmaged in any way.

Use a flashlight to peer in the shift access hole and align the notch.

If some yayhoo has tossed the thermostat and thermostat housing overboard....well no wonder it doesn't work.

Thanks F.R. for info regarding how the cooling system works. I did not identify the thermostat housing and investigate. I will need to drop the unit again to see. The o ring onn the bottom of the drive shaft looked good. It was the one at top that was bugered. So the oil under the plate that the thermostat presses against would in fact spill out when I layed the unit on side? I guess I need to pull off the bottom. Is there gaskets to replace down there ??Yes I came back to the bucket after lake test because it appeared so little water was coming out yet the engine ran fine and didn't appear to get hot. I was scared to continue running because I had distinct memory of these engines of this vintage sprayed water. Plus everyones advice is to change impeller so I did and have been reluctant to go back for fear of destroying her.

The thermostat is in the top of the cylinder head.
