I’ve been searching for a 15p prop to try . I currently have a 17p prop (the white one) which fits fine.

The white prop fits my 1977 Merc 850 sn04721196. The black one ( part # on it is 48-77342
A40L 15P....then in larger numbers.....R986) was ordered on e-bay last year…and was supposed to fit.
You can see in the pictures that the black prop is deeper than the white one…and seems to have the splined washer built in as a part of it. Placing it on the shaft…with a tab washer behind it…there is barely enough thread left to thread on the nut halfway…..It surely can’t be intended to be used that way; can it???

Unless maybe there are variations in the “thrust hub”…the piece that goes on in front of the prop??? Maybe there are thinner ones than the one I have…which would allow the prop to fit further on the shaft….allowing the nut to fit on all the way?????

I need help to determine if there is something that I am missing in how to get this prop to work for me….or failing that…can someone tell me what application it’s for..so I can properly offer it up for sale?? Larger outboard??? Mercruiser application???

Thanks so much folks, Chuck

One thing - you are right. That prop does not fit!

It does look like it would possibly fit on a newer Merc/Mercruiser.

Maybe some one with knowledge of the older OB's will respond.

Good Luck!

the black prop fits direct reversing, rh rotation 1968 and earlier 700 and 800 mercs with thrust hub 30581A1 which is no longer available.
The R986 is a prop shop repair number.

Thanks so much Kenny...

Sorry I didn't respond sooner to acknowledge your (always) knowedgable reply. I was on vacation without internet access.

"Direct Reversing"; eh? AKA the Docbuster...

Geez...I have me an antique here. Now at least I know who to try to sell it to.

Now, if someone out there can sell me a decent 15p prop that wil fit my 850 4 cylinder (1977)...I'll be all set.

Thanks again Kenny for your relentless contributions here...
