Other than a bad impeller what would cause no flow out my 150 johnson's telltails? Could you damage a motor running on the watet with the flush cap off. I wonder if I might have a damaged head. I only get exhaust out the telltails. Need some help

Have you tried running a paper clip in the nipple of the telltale to see if it is obstructed? Also ,trace the telltale hose back to the engine block and disconnect it to see if there is an obstruction where water leaves the engine block or in the hose itself.Tell us what you find.

Re: still no flow

I look at the line from the telltales to the motor today. It is very short, about an inch long and for the most part goes into the block instantly. I took the lower unit apart last winter to fix the prop shaft. It was running fine at that point, but since then I ran the motor out of the water with just the flush hose hooked up with not muffs. I am sure the impeller is still okay.
I wish i knew how and where the water flows thru the block and water jacket. I am becoming afraid that i have a head prob due to over heat.

If the motor was started and run with no water to the intake of the pump it doesn't take long to smoke an impeller.I would be looking at dropping the lower unit and inspecting waterpump.

I agree. I looked at it this morning and saw no damage. With the flush hooked up water comes right down the impellor line. My concern is that by running it with just the flush that the motor was not being cooled. If a head went can the act this way?

ps
When the lower is off I place the garden hose on the tube that water gose into, coming out the impellor. I did this with the motor running to make sure the impellor was not the problem. Still only has exhaust coming out the tales

Thermostats. On your model they are located on the upper face of your head covers.Just above and to the side of your top sparkplugs. There is a threaded cap that contains them with an "o"ring seal behind. There will be a spring behind the cap that holds the thermostat assy shut until enough waterflow at higher throttle overcomes the spring tension and allows full flow through T/stats.These assemblies should be replaced every couple of years.

Here's a pic. 1992 Johnson 150 crankcase and cylinder heads
#18,25,53,& 52 is your thermosat assembly. There are two,....one on each head cover.

The only way to truly inspect the impeller is to remove the lower unit and disassemble waterpump. If its been more that three years since it was replaced ,it's due.Running on hose will give you a false indication of its pumping efficiency due to city water pressure.

Robert are you running the motor with muffs and a hose or just a hose at the flush adapter port? If just running at the flush adapter you are probably not getting water to the pump. Or did I miss read your post?
