Check the cables, grounds and powerleads..
Ensure the cables are hooked up correctly for your application. It sounds like you may have a perko switch, make sure that is hooked up correctly. If that dont work pull the starter take it to local auto repair store.. They can test it.. I had a similiar problem and it turned out while rushing work on the boat I hooked up the cables wrong and the starter wasnt getting juice.

Good luck

Have you checked to see that the motor is not seized up (turning over by hand)??? If so and it's ok, you will need to check the voltage at the starter(big terminals) should be 12.5v or better. Have you tried jumping at the starter??? This eliminates the rest of the starting system. Just be careful with this as you will inevitably make some sparks. You don't want to blow yourself up with fumes from the bilge. Vent the bilge real good and have the cover open for a while. If you jump it at the starter and it still just clicks, time to get a new starter or pull that one for a rebuild. Let us know what you find.

bowhuntr

Remove the sparkplugs and pour some Marvel Mystery oil down each plug hole and let it set for a few days and then try to turn.

That could be a possibility, but not quite sure how to go about doing that?? the spark plugs are on the underside and the exhaust is in the way? any easy way to get to them? :)

Can you turn the engine over by hand ??

By grabbing the pully on the front of the motor.
If it turns even a little it isnt siezed.

The clicking sound,
Where is it coming from??

If you cant turn the engine over by hand try it again after you get the plugs out.
It should be real easy to turn over by hand then.
If after the plugs are out and you still cant turn it by hand the engine is locked up.

Re: Still No Luck with engime turning over

you can also turn the engine by hand if you put it in gear and grab the prop and turn it...
I know I did that with my 350cid. and I was able to turn it with the plugs in

Tallman

I too have a 4.3l merc and had trouble taking the plugs out it seemed like they were going to break take your time go back and forth tighten then loosen unitl they come out they will just take your time let us know what happens it sounds like if you lube the cyclinder walls after you take the plugs out and turn the prop while in gear you should be ok then put the starter back on after eveything loosens up........

Re: Still No Luck with engime turning over

Thanks for the info. . I did manage to get my plugs out this afternoon and was able to spin the prop by hand in gear. . it is very tough and the starter still doesnt want to turn it? any suggestions on what type of lube or oil i should try now? thanks guys for the help, everyday goes by that i have more hope in my engine afterall but not out of the woods yet. . . . . a little off the subject but as a possible backup plan, I purchaced a 1974 21' glasstron today with a late 80's 302 in it and a jet propulsion system. . it was a steal at 300 bucks and the engine starts right up and rumbles like its got a pair :)

did you get a new starter solenoid with the new starter? The click click sound is either its not getting enough juice or the solenoid isn't engaging

Re: Still No Luck with engime turning over

i would asume so. . isnt the solenoid attached to the top of the starter? If so then yes. . I have also tested my voltage and i am steady at 12.9 volts. The starter just doesnt seem to want to turn the flywheel. . makes a sound like a drill when it is binding up on the motor

Re: Still No Luck with engime turning over

A couple of ideas - First if you can get a socket on the nut on the end of the crankshaft you shouold be able to turn the motor over especially if you have the plugs out. Use an extension and a breaker bar if necessary.

The starter sounding like a drill indicates that the Bendix gear (which is the assembly on the starter motor shaft that engages the flywheel) is frozen. Sometines you can free them up by removing, cleaning and oiling. That won't cost you a dime.

customcar2boat,
I had a thought.
Have someone turn the key while you watch the starter engage the flyweel.
Is it engaging properly??

Maybe it needs to be shimmed and is not engaging properly.

The harness plug--grab a hold of it and push and pull so as to make a better connection. The kicker on the solenoid may not be getting enough juice from a bad connection of the main plug of the wiring harness.
