1978-80 Merc 20 hp ser #561-----

New charging coils/switch box/and rebuilt the carb.

Sat for about 2 years.

Got spark at plugs but only will "backfire once through the exhaust" and to get this I have to spray starter fluid into the cyclinder.

Bad "trigger".

DVA volt o.k.

Sounds like the plug wires are switched, John.

I can't believe it!

Been working on this thing for a month.

Have been a porsche mechanic/ welder/machinist and transmission guy for 20 years.

Raced NHRA Pro-Stock bike for a few years.

My point is I go out after reading your post, shoot a little spray into the cyclinders and starts like a kitten.

Am I dumb or what??

Did not let it run as not to destroy the pump.

Thanks so very much!!

I don't understand as I had the right hand coil as per wiring diagram to the #1 and left to #2.

I guess it was out 180 degrees timing.

God Bless and thanks again!

The coils can be reversed if you reversed the wires from the switchbox to the coils. This is something that can be done intentionally if you are trying to isolate whether a problem is in the coil or the switchbox if one cylinder is not firing.

Another thing to check with these motors if they seem out of time is sheared flywheel key.

Also it is not recommended to use "spray" starting fluid in two-cycle motors as it washes the lube off the internal parts. Use gas/oil mix in a squirt can instead.

Glad you got her running! I love my Merc 200!
