Still no tach II

81 Evinrude 50, Rectifier tested good, charges when running(went from 12.8to 14) but no tach, zeros and jumps on key hit but no reading when running.

Checked stator shows .9 on yellow/grey and .8 on yellow/blue and a high reading when checked from yellow to ground, which my manual tells me it is shorting to ground.

Can the battery charge if the stator is bad or did I not have my meter set right, 200 ohms is the lowest setting on my multi meter.

Not a big deal just frustrating.

Try switching the gray tachometer signal wire at the engine from the yellow/gray wire post to the yellow, and see if the tachometer responds.

Nothing, like I said , it isn't a big deal,the battery charges which is the important part, I would just like the tach to work.

I tried 2 different tachs and ran new wire directly from the engine, needle zeros with the key then jumps when you hit the key but drops to 0 again.

Vacation is a couple weeks away so dropping 300 on a stator to make a tach I don't need work is kind of out of the question, I would much rather sit on the beach and have a beer.

I am open to any more ideas though.

Rectifier is made up of 4 diodes for full wave rectification.

One bad and the battery still charges but only a half wave, AND a small shot of AC voltage which stops the tach and contributes to an early death of your battery.

Test for AC voltage at the battery terminals,
Disconnect the rectifier and retest BOTH directions, red wire to ground,
then replace the defective rectifier and your tach should begin working again.

The rectifier is new and confirmed working but I will do that test when I get home, is this done with the rec on the engine or removed?

When I check it on the engine it shows both ways but off the engine(no ground) it shows good.
