I have a 1963 9.8 (110) merc that I need to replace the impellerand I do not have a manual for it. Can anyone tell me how to take apart the lower unit to get to the impeller?

Re: still not pumping

I have a 62 6hp, should be similar. Remove one through bolt at the back and one nut at the front. Shift into forward and pull down on the lower. 2 nuts hold the housing, remove them then gently pry up on the upper housing with a screw driver, the housing will lift up. Pull off the plate and pull the old impeller out, use a zip tie to set the vanes clock wise and reinstall into the pump housing, cut the zip tie and push down till the pump seats, reinstall the plate/housing/gearcase.

Re: still not pumping

I'm thinking thr impeller on the 9.8 is located at the top end. There are 6 bolts under the cowling, but also looks like an ear on each side that will prevent the lower unit to just slip down, plus there are 4 side screws that look like need taken off i'm sure. Any other suggestions would be greatfull.

You are not reading what I wrote, the impeller is at the top of the gearcase. 2 Bolts hold the gearcase on, once you drop the gearcase you will see the impeller housing. The 6 bolts you are seeing hold the powerhead on, the powerhead doesn't need to be removed to replace the impeller.
