i have a 1973 85hp johnson i was trying to get it in for strippers but that did not happen.I can not seem to keep this motor runing.this is my first motor boat.what am i doing wrong? i changed the spark plugs and the gas.the other owner had spark plugs from a merc.in it.i can get it started and keep it runing with the warm up lever but as soon as i put the lever down after warm up the motor just stalls.model is 85esl73m. :( :( :mad: :mad: :confused: :confused:

Well, I'd start by looking at your idle mixture, search this board for info on that.. <br /><br />Secondly, what did you change the plugs for?<br /><br />I have a close relative of your motor and I am using Champion L76V and it purrs like a kitten.<br /><br />Those plugs have built in supression I think and they have no ground lead on the end..<br /><br />with your own plugs you could try indexing them as well, but I doubt that'll make alot of differnce.<br /><br />rgds<br /><br />Frank

Hi Dwhyble, You need a manual. I would pull the carbs and clean them (all the little holes and orifices) then if you have a manual do a sync and link. If the compression is good on all cyls and it has good spark on all I'll bet it will run much better.
