I recently bought a 1983 16.5" Stingray Super Sport (SVB165) With a Mercruiser 120 I/O. Wondering how the transoms rate compared to other boats. I understand age doesn't always matter more of who owned them, but what about the MFG process in 1983? I've heard other manufacturers had issues with adhesive, etc...
Mine LOOKS ok, i think im going to try the newly learned knock test. I'd really like to avoid drilling if its not in bad shape...
The dealer i bought it from did a "pre-delivery inspection" and stated the transom was "OK" but i doubt they actually bore into it. I pushed the outdrive around and watched the transom while it ran, turned, tilted, etc... and nothing seemed to flex.
If there is some rot is it safe to leave for now? I'm mostly a slow moving river rat (small river) with the occasional burst of speed... maybe even with a tube...
Just wondering thoughts from those more experienced than I.
