Has anyone used something like this:

to do any repair work on cracked water jackets? I have a 1985(ish) 3.0 OMC with a crack and it's too close to the exhaust port to use any chemical repair like JB Weld with any success. Was curious to hear if anyone tried something like that. Thanks!

Re: stitching pins?

I've seen engine block repairs done by Metallock on Rustom 20R270 entablatures, a Sulzer 5RTA58 and a Crossley - Pielstick V-14 PC2.5, as well as an NKK-Pielstick L6 PC2.5, but haven't seen much on smaller engines. The tolerances and machining would have to be of an exceptional level to keep the oil out of the water, vice versa and to ensure that neither escaped to atmosphere.

If the crack is that high on the engine, I would bet it's probably cracked internally. That would let water into the oil and is non repairable.

There's no oil running through the block on that side (it runs on the pushrod side), so no chance of that. The pins cost less than 200 bucks. Thanks anyway.

Re: stitching pins?

Many years ago I used them on an old Merc 165 engine. They were notorious for cracking above the centre core plug on the exhaust manifold side. Worked a treat and lasted the 6 years I had the engine. That was in a water jacket and it never leaked.

Cheers,

If you can get to the crack without having to pull the engine I would think it would be worth trying. Saving all that effort pulling the engine. I have never used them myself, but I have seen blocks that have them and they seem fine.

I would suggest welding but that close to the block deck would probably cause some warping.
