I parked my truck and trailer at a diner and it was gone. Does anybody know if my unit can be tracked if it gets turned on again? Hummingbird gave me the run around, the State Police gave me a report # and I fiqured if this unit gets turned on again it could be tracked and the thieves locked up. Or is it gone with the wind. Thanks Joe:(

How do you propose they track it? It's only a receiver.

Theft of GPS devices is on the rise. I know that Garmin is including password protection on some of their products. It only works if you use it, however.

A friend of mine had his road GPS stolen and he logged it as such on the Garmin site. Supposedly, they will not authorize any new or upgraded maps to be loaded onto the unit. If it ever comes in for service, they will keep it and alert him. Fat chance he'll ever see it again but at least he did what he could to slow them down.

So the thieves are stealin' GPS's and gas. Hmmm? Somebody's gonna have fun on the water this summer and not get lost! That suks though and more than an inconvenience even with insurance. IMHO if you didn't work for it (and pay for it) you're not entitled to it!

Sorry just PO's me, they took my trim planes 2 yrs ago right off the boat while it was sitting in my back yard.

A 29 dollar Sirius Radio can be turned OFF with a phone call making it useless to steal, The GPS makers have just not gone to the trouble because it does NOT cost them anything when the units are stolen like a SAT radio would

A word on your GPS, I had a customer tell me how he went into a store to buy some stuff came out and someone had smashed his window and took his GPS and his Garage door opener... They fired up his gps punched in HOME and proceeded to empty his garage while he filled out a police report.

I had a 5 gallon topside gas tank stolen from the back of my truck, it was in poor condition and didn't even have a drop of gasoline in it, people just steal for the pure joy of it sometimes.

EDIT** Also if you have one of the Kobolt truck tool boxes purchased from lowes you should really install a new lock on it. My buddy has the exact same toolbox and guess what? His key unlocks my toolbox

That means your key also unlocks his tool box.

Tracking it, no probably not. It isn't like LoJack that sends a signal out when activated. But, if Humminbord really wanted too, don't know if they can now though, they can disable the unit by providing serial number and a kill code. They do it all the time with XM, Sirius, and even people who figure out how to steal sat tv. I saw an Acura news letter about it at some point that if your unit is stolen, they can deactivate it that way.

Humminbird does require product registration before download of new firmware. Even if they had some sort of ID notification, unlikely that it would catch the thief. Most likely, just the guy who happened to buy the "hot" unit.

Well, the people who resort to stealing are usually not the more intelligent, logical thinkers in the gene pool. They will still smash your window and steal it without considering the possibility that it might be useless to the next guy.

The disable feature benefits the pay-for-service provider but I suspect it will do little to stem the theft of these devices. In the end, you've still lost your nifty gizmo.
