I have a 9.8 2 stroke Nissan for my dinghy, which I am storing horizontally in a locker under the sole of the boat. The manual says strictly, if the motor is to be horizontal, to have the front of the motor face up. It won't fit in the locker in that position, so I am laying it on it's side. I just can't figure out on a 2 stroke, why I am NOT supposed to lay it on its side. Will I do some damage to the motor ???
Thanks

I think what they are most concerned about is:

1. Fuel leaking out of carbs.

2. Potential damage to the tiller handle and/or shift handle and linkage. If you run it out of fuel,I cant see # 1 being a huge issue. #2 I can't speak for since I do not know how the engine is layed out.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the shift linkage, on one side and the tiller on the other are somewhat vulnerable. I had the same warning on a 3.5 hp nissan, which had an integral fuel tank, and lo-and-behold, when it once slipped in my garage and was tilted face-down for a few days, fuel from the tank leaked out.

Somebody in another forum mentioned that the floats may get effected if stored sideways over time.
It looks like it is not such a big issue. I wish there was somebody at Nissan who could tell the answer .. oh well.
Great forum, thanks
