I found my Johnson 8HP Saildrive upside down, on its head, in the garage (for 2yrs). I vaguely remember, I think, in the owners manual that this is bad as tranny fluid (gear oil?)can or will seep into the head.

Is this so, in which case how expensive is this?Or is it OK to fire it up?

Thanks!

Re: storing motor upside down

Hello Ezlee
The only problem with having the lower unit higher than the powerhead is water. You want to avoid this position until all water drains out of the lower unit. Of course being upside down for a long period would allow a greater chance for forign stuff to get in your cylenders. Some things might be mud wasps, mice, moisture, etc. Just remove the spark plugs and pull it over a few times if all seems fine then fire it up. As far as gear oil leaking down. This will be in a sealed unit. If it leaks in any position it needs repair. If anything a little gear oil might help preserve the engine. You would want to wash it out with pre-mix fuel before starting. I'm sure it would smoke a little more than normal for a while. Personally, I don't think you have a problem.

Not the best position, but probably no harm done.

If it were a 4-stroke it would be a problem as the crankcase oil would've made a real mess.
