stranded 25-30 miles out and had to be towed back...found what we believe was saltwater in the sparkplug ports...as we were fishing around the rigs sometimes the motor would cut off durring idle (not always )but it was always easy to restart, then it cut off at half idle and would not restart.... I have been told that another boat had the same symptoms and it was because the timing was off....would that allow salt water into the block ?? I was thinking the water jacket had a leak in it...don't know yet as it is in the shop, but has anyone ever heard of the timing causing this problem ?

Re: stranded

Sorry to read of your untimely end of fishing. On I/Os I had a rusted out passage on the inlet port of the cylinder head. This allowed raw water into the cylinder. Intake manifolds and risers on I/Os can also deteriorate, especially in salt water, and allow water into the cylinders. My brother-in-law also had a weird circumstance when he backed off quickly on the throttle causing water to wash up through the flapper and bellows and into the exhaust ports. In his case it resulted in a hydraulic lock which doesn't sound like your situation. Good luck and please post the prognosis from your mechanic for my own curiosity. Thank you.

Re: stranded

I've had the same problem w/ my 2007 1952 w/ a 4.3 190hp found it was the wiring harness to the fuel pump that sits on top of the engine, the connections were loose and the salt water corroded the connection, I used vaseline on all my connections on the boat and my trailer wires and haven't had a problem at all. salt water doesn't brake down vaseline but does break down electrical jelly.

Re: stranded

mechanic said it is a cracked head from overheating....could have been worse ...the head is only $ 300.....I never noticed my temp. gauge showing hot (if it did)...and for some reason I thought there was a temp. alarm on my boat...oh well, I'll be back fishing in a week or so
