79 25 johnson 25 will not go off idle speed in forward

gear but goes wide open in reverse sometimes

got it home in the barrel and had to hold the carb open

to get it to run but then it smoked like crazy

is there a neutral safety switch that cuts voltage?

thanks for any advice

Re: strange 79 25 johnson wont come off idle

There is a switch on e-start models to keep from starting in gear, will not affect anything else. I would check all the linkage to be sure the cam under the flywheel is rotating and if so, see that the butterfly in the carb is opening. Operating the carb by hand does not work so well as the timing is not advancing like it would normally.

when you say cam rotating you mean when i go forward and back in gears or when i accellerate

i thank you kindly for your help and everyone else who helps out here
experienced advice is worth so much

With the motor turned off, put it in forward and look for the plate below the flywheel to see if it is rotating while moving the throttle. At full throttle the butterfly in the carb should be open.

yes the hotplate moves

also its got points and 79 was the first year for coils?

i need to check spark, and as far as i know the carburetor
is opening because the tiller handle gets twisted which moves the plate to the right and pushes the roller forward
which is linked to the carburetor and opens it.

im thinking i have some sort of ignition problem because it would sputter going down the river

it would kick in then go bac kthen kick in then go back

but mostly just stay at idle speed...

Is this a new problem? Or did it start doing this after some one worked on it?

no it happened after it rode on the back of my boat
for two hours to deer hunt

i put a new fuel pump on it when i got back
also i disconnected the kill switch and i think this helped
the running at idle speed thing, i think it had a constant cross on voltage?

now it will start smoke and die..

where is a good reference point for the lean/rich needle?

dads 85 seahorse says start at 1 and 1/4 turns out

i put a 30 dollar set of points and condensers on this motor, which by the way is a 76 not a 79, and it runs like new motors should..

the problem with it lately has been oil in the barrel from the lower unit..

i guess we will figure that one out soon enough

haha

That is most likely unburned fuel, oil and carbon coming out of exhaust which is being trapped in the barrel; you wouldn't see it probably out on the water.

Normal - not oil from the lower unit, just unburnt 2-cycle oil.

yeah but it looks like a mocha color and floats, its not the black stuff that sticks to the side after draining..

even if it is lower unit oil, is it something thats fixable with a seal kit?

Drain a little oil from the lower unit and see if it's milky. If it is, then yes, you need a seal kit. It does take some special tools to change all the seals. I'd probably do a pressure test of the L/U to see where it's leaking.

perhaps an air compressor with a brass nozzle in one of the drain/fill holes with some soap mix to see for bubbles?

think im on the right track

If there is oil from gearcase in the barrel there will be water in the gearcase. Usually turning the oil milky. Also the slick in the barrel likely smells gassy.
