Strange bird in my garage

I was disconnecting the battery charger from the mower when out from under the deck comes this strange looking bird.

I looked at all the birds on this page. The closest one I found to what it looked like was this one...

url

I ran away from me when I approached it but never ran far. It just kept a little distance from me. I never did see it try to fly. To me it almost looked as if it had no wings or tail feathers. It was very smooth, not scruffy at all. Really a beautiful bird that reminded me of a kiwi. Even though it never tried to fly, it did not appear injured.

I wanted to get a picture, but the dogs started getting curious as to what I was doing. I didn't want the dogs to kill the bird so I left the garage and told the dogs to "git".

When I described what I saw to my wife, she said she'd seen the same bird perched up on the gutter, apparantly picking food out of it.

If I see it again, I'll try to get a picture. I've never seen a bird like this and it seems so out of place.

I was expecting a T-bird or a Firebird! Those I could help ya with. The ones with feathers I can only help you shoot or eat. Sorry...

I am thinking that it may be a variety of sand piper, as they have a tendancy to lead you away from their nest if you get to close.

Would they have eggs this time of year? Not in my lawn mower I hope. It's time to pick up leaves.

Okay how big was it? Seagull size..... Blue Jay size? Information like that might help.......

If it's a really rare bird we are going to be obligated to report it and your house will be declared a sanctuary..... yes you will have to move out but you will have saved the rare bird :D

It was bigger than the birds we normally have; blue jay, cardinal, robin, etc...

It was bigger than a woodpecker and maybe a little smaller than a crow.

That bird will have to climb a little higher up the food chain before I move though.:D

Next time you get close, try clubbing it to death. Then you can take the remains to a proper authority and find out if its a rare and endangered species or not.

Dang, I just spit my cold beverage all over my keyboard again,
but I have no clue what the bird is.

I vote for the sandpiper. They're pretty entertaining when they fake injury to lead you away from the nest.

They're migratory, so they probably nest in the spring in the North, and in the fall down South.
