Last night my dog Keeper was acting weird. He is somewhat affectionate, but not near as much as he was last night. He is no doubt overweight so he spends a lot of time laying around. However last night, he would go over to where my wife was sitting and sat down right by her legs. He would stay there for about 3 minuets then he would come over to me and sit by me for a few minuets. He did this all night long going back and forth. He never laid down to sleep like he normally would do. Just odd to see him act this way.

His appitite is good, drinks plenty of water, and looks as healthy as ever. Just never saw him being so insecure the last few days. He is in the giant breed catagory and will be 9 years old in a few months.

Re: Strange Dog Behavior

I remember when we iboaters helped you name your new pup "Keeper", SS.

Sounds to me like anxiety over something he senses and you don't. It may be environmental or it may be a health issue. Or, of course, it may be something of no consequence.

I would do some investigating. Labs (if I remember correctly) don't get anxious over nothing.

Hope it is nothing serious. Good luck. :)

Re: Strange Dog Behavior

Thanks JB. That is what my wife and I was thinking. When I got home from work today, all the throw rugs on the floor were not messed up. That is odd as Keeper just loves to take his paws and bunchies them up. Yes he is a Lab Newfoundland mix.

I noticed last Friday morning when I put him outside to do his business, he came back in and just laid by the back door. My wife even noticed he stayed in the kitchen by the back door. We figured he was bummed out because it was the day I go to the lake for the weekend. We call him Daddys dog and Mommys puppy. He is more attached to me than her, but he still loves her a lot.

So far he seems to be more himself this evening. My wife said last night he kept pacing back an forth around the bed, down the hall, in the living room, and back to the bedroom over and over again. Hopefully this isn't anything serious. Many family members are attached to this dog.

Did get him to lose about 20 pounds, but he still needs to lose about 30 more. He is weighing in at 146 now.

def worth keeping an eye on but keep him in his routine. dogs will pick up on people's stress so don't pamper or make a big deal out of it.

take him on a nice walk. tired dog is a happy dog. (...now that I think of it, maybe he's just tired of the heat?)...make it a swim instead.

Check his liver area to see if he is in discomfort, is he always hungry, and does he drink lots of water (more than what another dog would drink)?

My in-laws dog did the same thing. She was my FIL dog but she keep close to my MIL for some reason. Shortly after, my MIL was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Somehow, the dog knew she was sick.

Re: Strange Dog Behavior

His eating and drinking is normal. He is an inside couch potatoe dog that hogs the air conditioner. So far this evening, he is not acting like he did last night. Actually it is like he is ignoring us????

As for him detecting something is medicially wrong,,,Is it my wife? Me? or BOTH! My wife does have RA (I have no idea on how to spell rhumatoid arthritis) and Keeper is able to pick up when she is about to have a flare up. However last night she was fine and she is good to go today.

Then my daughter that is into spirits (not alcohol) knows that about 45 years ago, a man died in this house. She was saying it is a possibility that it could have been that mans day of death that Keeper had sensed. We have caught him looking at a wall or in a closet tilting his head and whining sometimes. Wife said he is just weird like me............SS

Re: Strange Dog Behavior

Our dog is just the opposite...the poster dog for a 'lap dog'.

A couple of weeks ago we noticed that he wasn't jumping into Laura's lap whenever she sits down, and we started to wonder.

Come to discover that he was 'plugged' up (constipated), when I watched him in the back yard trying to take care of his business, all for naught. Went on line and learned that canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) and/or Metamucil would get him right again. Within a few days he was back to his lap loving self!

P.S. My wife had gotten in the habit of feeding him pieces of cheese whenever he did anything we approved of. I tried to tell her what cheese does...now she understands.

Might be something to the whole spirit thing. I've had cats and dogs that will freak me out when they all of the sudden perk up and stare at a corner or something. Always wondered what they were looking at.

Re: Strange Dog Behavior

As long as he's eating and drinking and POOPING normally he's probably ok. we lost a lab a couple of years ago that was a notorious chewer to a blocked intestine. Much the same symptoms, our vet said it would pass but when she got worse we had an x-ray done and found she'd ate a rope from a toy. She went into surgery immediately but she'd already gone septic and we lost her. If I ever see that behavior again, it's x-ray time to find out what's up. Hardest loss I've suffered that could have been avoided if we had caught it in time.

Our dog Amber was like that a few nights ago.. Weather patterns? Pressure?
Very lovable, More then usual. Another thing that was unusual about her. Over the last week, she's been peeing in the house... Dont know where that came from... But just as it came, she's now not doing it.

Something has either freaked him out or he is not well.
I'd get him checked out if there is no change soon.

This kinda what I was thinking.

The other thing, is your area forecast for some thunder lightning storms. Our Healer would get very insecure even if there was a hint of a thunder and this was a fearless dog.
