I have a 1995 20' Sea Ray Signature with a 5.0L / Alpha gen 2.

I'm getting gear lube from the drive leaking into the bilge. The strange thing is that it only leaks with the drive in the up position. When the drive is down is does not leak at all.

This has the oil monitoring bottle on top of the engine. I have checked for leaks from the bottle to the brass elbow that threads into the transom assembly it is all bone dry.

It seems to me that if the leak is affected by the drive position it should be leaking externaly into the water but it only leaks into the bilge.

The inner transom plate is dry, it looks like the leak is comming through from between the inner plate and transom or one of the bellows.
Is that possible?

I also had the gimbal bearing replaced two weeks ago.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Re: Strange drive oil leak

Was the gimbal bearing replaced due to water intrusion?

Your input shaft probably rusted, and trashed the main seal. You're leaking oil from the drive around the input shaft, which is coming in through the gimbal.

It's only leaking in the up position, because the oil is higher, and allowed to pour out, when the drive is up...
