Coming in from an outting yesterday I slowed the engine and trimmed all the way down. Before I knew it, the engine had begun tilting ALL THE WAY UP. I cut the power and a few seconds later it stopped at all the way up, and the tilt motor kept running for about 2 seconds. Pushing the throttle control tilt DOWN button would interrupt the upward movement but only until I released DOWN.

As soon as it got all the way up, it would go up and down normally using the throttle control tilt buttons.

I can tilt up and down no problem only if the engine is off and not in drive.

If the engine is running and in drive, and I attempt to trim UP OR DOWN, seemingly by itself it trims all the way up!!!

What the heck could be going on here?

Normal cause is a trim switch shorting. Often the problem is with one of the non Yamaha ones installed on the boat. The ones in the nose of bass boats are notorious for this.

remove the trim switch leads and toggle it with the pan switch. remove the pan switch leads and toggle it with the control box switch. if all the switchs pass the tests in the manual and none are bad you may have a trim relay failing. not very common but I replace 2 or 3 a year.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Strange Electrical Anomaly With Tilt/Trim

Did some troubleshooting and found that the tilt/trim switch located on the outside of the motor is flaky.

The area where this switch is located is constantly drenched by salt water while underway; does anyone know if this switch is waterproof?

Need to replace it. Where can I purchase such a switch?

Thanks.

Wow just priced the switch. a staggering $35.36 at an online Yamaha parts depot.

Just for a 3 way pushbutton switch!

If anyone know of discount marine parts depots, I am all ears!
