Hello all,

I took my boat out today for the first time since last October.. it’s a sea ray with a mercrusier 5.7 alpha one.
when pulling out of the canal I noticed an annoying grinding type noise when moving and again at idle. When in neutral it seems louder then when in gear, and also sounds like it’s over revving.. the noise also gets louder when turning the wheel hard left or hard right
The noise may have a little gurgling too.

Any thoughts?? Thank you

Gimbal bearing and/or ujoints. Time to pull the drive (should be yearly maintenance, I'm assuming you didn't pull it at the end of the season...)

I did not pull the drive at the end of the season.
It started right up, sounded great, as I was accelerating it did a little studder and then started to make that grinding noise (almost sounded like power steering)

I did pop the hatch, the engine sounds great. I just can’t figure out where the grinding sound is coming from

Everything is a gooey mess inside and a corrosion mess outside. The gimbal bearing is rusted to the drive shaft. There's gear oil all over. Needs a lot of maintenance.

Your photo taking is excellent though.

Yep. The classic I/O problem and why I pull the drive at the end of each season. Check for leaks in the drive shaft bellows and replace bellows any time you see water in there or even see small cracks developing in the folds of the cracks. Every 5 years or so would be a good interval. I have had them last much longer though. So you need a new gimble bearing, bellows and probably should consider changing the ujoints as well. Grease them and if rusty bits of grease comes out you should replace them. Or else risk a future failure.

I wouldn't just *consider* changing the ujoints considering what happened to that gimbal bearing.
