Re: strange question about an oil filter

If it's a block mounted oil filter (on the Port aft side of the block, just about a cup or less that was in the mounting area of the filter. Unless you drop the filter, the filter will remain full. Same with the remote filter that hangs down from the bracket on the exhaust riser.
Now, the one they put on upside down on the newer engines will drain it all out of the filter, only slow. If you hurry, you don't really loose all of it out of the filter, maybe 1/4-1/3rd the contents.

Thanks Don,port aft is where it is .Thats about what I thought but was not really sure.I recommended to my friend that he place a good size aluminum baking pan in the bilge in case he dropped the filter .He said it wont be necessary .I will check his bilge myself after he changes the oil because I doubt he would admit if he dropped it.Charlie

Charlie, it's not like the block is going to drain by removing the filter. So Don's response is spot on.

Now if it's oil dropping in the bilge that you are worried about, then yes a pan will be needed, in my opinion. As soon as you loosen that filter, the oil from the mounting area will run down the out side of the filter & drip down. And get on your hand! So have something down there to sop it up or catch it. Unless you want to break out the degreaser and clean the bilge afterwards.

The Exact Same amount as if you Did drain the base.......

A Trick I found a couple years ago,
Crack the filter just Loose with the wrench.... 'n take the Magnet off the bottom....... :D
Then slip a quart zip-lock bag under/around it,+ Spin it Off,+ Zip it Up........
Rarely more than a drop or two lost............ ;)

DON S---------Why in the world would a supposed leader possibly put a filter threaded side down? E P A requirement? Or a drug overdose?

CC
Bondo is right about the bag idea, I do just that I also lay out a thick layer of newspaper in the bilge, newspaper does a good job absorbing oil, Oh ya if your Buddy soils the bilge then you can give a bottle of simple green and a roll of paper towel for Christmas.
