Hey all, I have a evinrude 9.9 1979. Last night I took the carb off and clean it up good (lots of rust in the metal bowl and clogged jets.) This morning I went on a fishing trip by myself, everything was fine and the motor runs 10x better now! I was leaving the fishing hole and the motor shifted to forward fine. When I went to put it back into neutral it wouldn't get out of forward. I have to push the lever back a bit to reverse(but not into) and it will eventually go. Same thing with reverse, I have to pull it forward a tad. Almost like there isn't a neutral?

Is this something I can fix easily?

Re: Strange shift

sounds like the shift linkage has slipped, and binding. i believe there is a 1 x3 " plate on the side of the leg, the shift connection is behind the plate. also could be bad grommet binding shift rod.
