I have 1987 7.5l King Cobra in a Searay Sundancer 250 The Engine only has 13 hours on it since the repower this starting issue has been carried over to the new engine. randomly If the Battery voltage on the dash gauges shows 12.4volts or less the starter solenoid will hang up keeping the starter engaged even after the engine is running.you actually have to shut the battery switch off to make it stop.if you charge the batteries over night it will start fine.I have chased every wire ,Soldered all connection ,replaced the starter, and now the solenoid several times, and have 3 new batteries connected. After this occurres a couple of time the 4 post solenoid usually ends up shorting either the ignition post to battery or start post to battery. help please. our local OMC service shop sucks and I refuse to give them any buisness

Re: strange starter activities

it sounds like a low voltage problem, what is the voltage at the starter post before start and during. just leave the volt meter hooked and start. or it could be a bad inj switch check the power to the yellow wire during start up, it should power up while starting and drop off when key is released to the run position. I used to stop in crystal riv every year it has been 5 years since the last visit we will be down this x-mas cant wait!! I heard they cleaned up Port Parasite? & new owners. bob

Re: strange starter activities

The question is why would the solenoid hang? The problem once started will occur even if I lift the start wire and the ignition wire from the solenoid. This usually stays like this until it cools of. I am wondering if my parts supplier has a batch of bad solenoids. Thanks, the Port is now under new management they have torn down two older buildings added an Ale house and repaired and painted everything. We always get a room there for the Fourth of July and the start of Scollop season. They are trying to build a hotel but the city is hindering their effort.

Low voltage will weld/stick a solenoid.

Re: strange starter activities

Could the starter not be aligned, shimed properly, which wont allow the bendix to retract?

Dont know why this would only happen at low voltage?

Maybe the voltage isnt the problem, maybe it hangs because it gets hot. Will it hangup if the engine is cold and volts are less than 12.4v?

Have you tried a remote starter switch, when the battery shows below 12.4 v? This would isolate the problem to the wiring/ign switch. If your solenoid still hangs with a remote starter switch, then you know the wiring is OK.

Ken
