Re: Strange things caught while fishing
It was dark with no moon. I was alone about 2 miles south of Long Island trolling spoons for that 50 lb striped bass I've been looking for on a beauty Sept eve. ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzz, click, swing, game on. Heavy fish, take 50 yds, give back 75, rest, pump, crank, 15 minutes or so. Getting close, net by my side , looking for leader. Another 100 yd run just like you'd expect from a huge striper when he gets a glimpse of the hull. Now I'm convinced I will be on the cover of Sports Illustrated next week with this Goliath. Starting to shake from muscle strain and excitement. Probably another 10 minutes and I'm close. There's the barrel swivel and my six feet of 150# leader is under the boat. Grab the leader, set the rod down, no color yet, peer over the side, gently place the net in the water.........at that moment the leader goes slack, and thru the air and into the side of my head a thresher shark pup, maybe 75 lbs or so, leaps taking me by surprise. Scraped the flesh from my cheek, broke my glasses, and swam off tangled in my net and broke off the tip of my trolling rod. I cut the line from what was left of my rig and layed on the deck for about 20 minutes or so.
I picked up and went home a little shocked and very disappointed.
My wife wakes while I was slipping into bed. "How was your night?" she asked. I started telling her the story, she turned on the light, she looked at the damage to my face, and without missing a beat, said to me...."Sure, whatever, another bar fight with your buddies again!! No more of this so-called night fishing you do and go sleep in the basement!" She rolled over and turned the light out.
So I didn't catch a striper, didn't catch the thresher, but did catch a great women 22 years ago!!!!
