I have a 05 150 4 stroke. I put about 70 miles on her on an ocean trip last week. At the ramp while the motor was at an idle, I heard a light whining noise from the top of the motor. I took the cowling off and removed the plastic cover to reveal the belt and pullies. The whining noise seemed to come from the belt. I sprayed some belt dressing on the belt but the noise was still there. Upon further inspection, I think the noise is coming from a small steel wheel that the belt turns.

Anyone know what this wheel is? If you are standing in the boat and looking down on the motor, it is located on the left hand side about midway down. I sprayed some WD-40 around that wheel but it still seems to whine a little bit. It only really whines loud enough for you to hear it after a long run.

Also, after running her for about an hour and a half or so and you shut the motor off, it is a little hard to get back started. If it sits for about half an hour or so it fires right up

Thanks...

That is the belt tensioner. I have heard quite a few whine on different motors and brands. I would have a local dealer hear it and they should replace it if it is that loud.

You shouldn't spray anything on the belt because it may cause your belt to prematurely self destruct.

What is your starting procedure when the motor sits?

if i run my f150 that has 45hrs on it above 3500rpm for a time over 1/2 hr the engine will make a whine sound when you put it in neutral.the dealer says salt air is comming thru the air intake filter and getting on the belt.clean the belt and the sound should go away. only one time did my engine not starting right up after it was hot. took 3-4 trys then it started dont hve a clue why.

its likely your driveshaft bush. yamahas stance is its not detracting from engine performance so its not a warrantable item. if it annoys you to the point of no return. have your gearbox pulled and lube the bush. i get this noise on about 1 in 3 f150's.
i have found this noise telegraphs quite substantially, personally i think it has something to do with the split balance shaft gear. just my opinion.
as stated no spray on or near your belt.
on a sidenote, yamaha recently had quite a problem with ticking valves in their motorcycles.
similar to "no performance lost live with it" attitude, many people complained and yamaha buckled....
