They usually com sewn when you buy them. Hook & strap as a unit.

Re: Strap to hook

just a quick note on the webbing, do not trust the stiching to last, that holds the webbing around the hook.

It will deteriate in the sun, as well does not have as much holding/pulling power as say a good knot.

Re: Strap to hook

Hi Jonboat2.... Welcome again to the forum.
If the strap is really frayed or if the stitches have cone undone, it may be time for a whole new assembly. Walmart (not my favorite store, it's just close to home) sells a strap and hook combination; think it comes under the "Attwood" brand name. If your winch is in good condition, that's probably all u need.

Otherwise, the same company sells the same brand of winch complete with the strap and hook. Not a bad deal if you need to replace the whole thing.

Thanks for asking questions. That's what keeps the forum alive.

On the other hand, if price is a consideration, you can cut the strap off near the hook. Use a cigarette lighter or something similar to singe the end of the strap together. Then run in thru the hole in the hook and bring it back and tie a bowline or boline knot (forgot how to spell it) around the standing part of the strap. To be sure, it's not one of the prettiest rigs, but the knot will last a lot longer than the stitching.

Good luck and let me know how it all works.

I'm a Jon Boat guy too .....

Re: Strap to hook

I got tired of constantly replacing straps that either frayed or came apart at the stitching so I went back to steel cable. Even plain steel cable will outlast a strap and sunlight don't ruin a cable. I was getting two years tops out of a strap, I get 5 or more from even plain steel cables. The few winches with stainless steel aircraft cable will likely outlast me.

New straps are about $15. I just replace them every couple years. In the grand scheme of thing the cost is minimal.

Re: Strap to hook

A UV-stable heavy tie-down strap is about $30. When/IF the stiches fail, an awning or sail company can restitch the strap for $5- $10 or so. I got sick of dealing with steel cable due to coiling and frayed wires. The attwood straps are inexpensive and is actually what I am using now and going on two years no problems. IF it folds cranking in I unspool it on level ground and wind it back up flat so it has no stress/wear points.

Re: Strap to hook

I'm cheap so I've re-sewn mine. Did it once on my 20' cuddy and on the one I have now. I bring 12" of the strap through the eye of the hook, use a heavy vinyl needle and 80lb Power Pro fishing line. I sew across the hook end, go diagonal for 8", go across again, reverse the diagonal back to the hook end, go back down the side, cross over and go back up the other side. Basically sew a box with an X in the middle. Then I do an extra line across the loose end to firmly secure it. Takes about an hour and it's never let me down. May be more work than it's worth but I know the connection is stronger than any store bought set-up and it won't rot out as fast.
