I took my Duratech sportboat out labor day. I had some trouble with the Chrysler but I was ready for it as I had my son-in-law's 5hp mounted as a kicker.

So I took some photos as requested by JoeMan before I put it in the shed.

Re: Strapless photos

My '68 came with a Chrysler as well (75HP). My father had really mixed feeling about the motor. When it ran he said it was a monster, great hole shots, fast and smooth. The problem is it didn't always run...It's final demise was electrical, it would run for days then just stop and you couldn't get it started again. Parts were NLA, plus like I said it left him powerless other times through the years so he just cut bait. It was to bad as the motor it's self was in pristine shape, much like the boat it's self.

We had a 70HP Force (just a newer Chrysler) for about 8 years that served us well but ended up cooking a piston. It was an OK motor, nothing to write home about though. It liked to suck reed valves (which from what the local Force dealer told me was very common on this motor) and it mid range was kind rough which I think was a product of the single carb.

Now I have a 75HP Mariner on there. It ended up being free. I got it from a family member who said we would work out a price after I got it going. Well, a mouse had lived in it and I had to replace every electrical component except the coils. I had so much into it he just gave it to me.

I like this motor, it's smoother then the Force. The only thing is it sounds like, well, what it is, a Merc. Some times I like the noise, other times don't. Can't complain to much as it get me where I need to go!

The Chrysler died like it was shut off so I am sure it was the CD unit. I am going to turn it into an old fashion points and condenser ignition with an after market Accel motorcycle coil. I will have more faith in that than a black box I can't look into.........................Tom C
