Stratos vs. Procaft

All things being equal is Stratos better than Procaft? I'm in the market for a fish and ski and saw two boats. One was a 18.5 ft 1990 Procraft 150HP Mariner motor, the other what a 19FT 1988 Stratos w/200 HP Evinrude. Both have been well maintained and both are the same price. Any thoughts which is better and what I should look for before taking the plunge. Thanks for any insight you might have.

Re: Stratos vs. Procaft

Uhhhhhhhhh here is where I get shot. I had a bad bad bad experience with procraft constuction......... split one from stem to stern right down the keel running in a rough chop. Never again.

I would go Stratos and I am even more fond of Ranger's

I have owned both. A late 70s model Procraft and a mid 90s Javelin which is basically the same hull as a Stratos. I would go Stratos and not think twice about it plus for the same price your getting more horses with the engine. But really, I would be looking more at the condition of the two engines than the brand of the boat because that is where the most potential for problems are likely to rear their ugly head.

At that age, forget about the name on the side and look at condition, maintenance, and how it was stored. Either one could be a gem or a turd depending on those attributes. I like my procraft - are there better built boats - sure, are there better cared for - I doubt it. Hopefully the next owner (someday) will feel the same.
