Happy new year to everyone

I own a 1977 70 hp Evinrude. I am told that there should be a "****" stream of water coming from the motor. I was also told that motor did not have one. How exactly do i know if the water pump is working correctly?
Who do I listen too?

Thank you

Re: stream of water

Les, when the thermostat opens up you should see a spray/stream of water coming fron the exhaust ports at the upper rear potrion of the midsection, not much to listen to unless the overheat horn goes off.

If your in doubt or it hasn't been replaced in awhile you might want to replace it now, for peace of mind if nothing else. Its also a good idea to replace the t'stat at the same time, IMO.

Re: stream of water

You can check approximate temp by CAREFULLY feeling the head as the motor runs.It should be too hot to hold your hand on but not so hot it burns you.BE CAREFUL!!
As MCM says if any doubt about condition replace impeller and tstat.

Re: stream of water

My question exactly Les, my 1979 175 evinrude's tell-tail only dribbles water even after new water pump and tstat have been installed.
Does the stream out of tell-tail only get strong after tstat opens or do I have a problem....
Thank you ahead of time for the help.

Re: stream of water

Ya missed it by 1 year. OMC added the overboard indicator in 78. You can add on to your 77 in 06.

Evan 175...You should be getting a strong stream directly from start up out of the tell-tale. Check the hose for clogs, take it off and blow it out and check the nipple that it connects to on the engine pan, sand and other things usually clog them up.

Re: stream of water

My '77 85hp just spits or sprays water out, but doesn't indicate thermostat operation other than maybe a little more spray. If you're getting water spray it's good, but if you have ANY doubts as to the last time the impeller was changed then put it on the to-do list. And ditto what MCM said, service both the 'stat and impeller at the same time.

My 76 RUDE didn't have an indicator (PISSER) either, so I just installed one, It works great and I can tell instantly if i have a problem, but then again I also have an aftermarket temp gauge installed :)

It's not too difficult to install one yourself if you are a little handy with tools, do a search, there are a couple of threads detailing how.
