Stream or Spray?

Hey Everyone,

Long time reader, first time poster. I have a 1979 Chrysler "691cc" - 45 horse? on a 15' Chrysler runabout. When running my motor, I have noticed I do not have a stream of water that runs out the back of it like most other motors. My motor seems to be spraying water out. Is this OK? Normal for the age / make of the motor? Or is this an indication of a problem?

At idle or low speed, the water should spray out. At cruise speed, it should flow out. that's because at cruise speed , most of the exhaust water is going out through the motor leg underneath the surface.

I think you're talking about one of those pee streams you see out of a back corner of the motor? Yours doesn't have one of those. You might be able to put one on. There might be a plug with a 1/8" pipe thread on the head you can use to install a fitting and route a bit of speedometer hose out of a hole in your pan.

If this motor is new to you, I'd suggest rebuilding the water pump unless it has been done recently. That and a fresh change of gearlube are always good ideas when you get a used motor. A set of sparkplugs, too.

Hey guy's thanks a lot for the reply's. I am relieved that it is not a problem, but I think you are right Willy. I have invested in a manual and will also invenst in a new waterpump and some gearlube before I put her back in the water this season. Do you guys know of a reputable source for a water pump? Will I need any gaskets?

I have a 1967 45HP chrysler and it does a little better than a dribble coming out. It is noticable but nothing like the newer motors or jet skis. Sounds like it is okay to me

If you don't have water coming out of your engine at high speed you MUST check the water pump or you might blow your engine. It should spray out at idle but if your pump is worn out it won't suck enough at high speed. Check for a hole in the top casing if the impeller looks good. You can patch it with JB Weld if there's a hole.

Re: Stream or Spray?

OK I want to clear something up for myself... My motor is a '78 Chrysler 75hp. I've always thought that if the water pump is working correctly, water should flow/spray from the two exhaust/vent? holes on the back of the motor, just below the engine cover. I've always thought that these were the so-called "tell-tale" holes. However, I also have what I refer to as the "pee hole" just below the anti-ventilation plate, on the starboard side of the lower unit. I always thought that this lower hole was just to drain leftover water. I think I need to have this cleared up for me, because it seems that some posters on this board have used the two terms interchangeably...

That being said, here's another issue. I've got my engine running on the muffs and it runs just fine. However after running it for about 30-45 seconds at a time I freaked out and shut it down because I could not see any water emitted from the upper holes. (After shutting it down, a few drops could be seen, but not at all what I would expect as a good amount of coolant.) At the same time, the lower hole had plenty of hot water running from it. I assume that my pump is working fine because of this, but it's still due for an impeller replacement so I'm doing that anyway. So, I guess what I'm looking for here is: what should I be looking for in the future to determine that the pump is working correctly? Thanks for the help, y'all.

camfrogg. why not try it in a filled garbage can and see if there is any difference. Just keep the hose in the can and flowing . I think that is more realistic than muffs. At least then, you'd have some back pressure.
