Stress cracks

Hey I Boats, I do have a question, but first let me say, long time listener short time caller. I love this site.

I recently sold my boat(missing it already). But we sold it buy a bigger one. We recently looked at a 1985 Sea Ray Monaco 21' and Overall shape is in good condition, the thing that concerns me is that the entire hull below the waterline has stress cracks from bow to stern, up the transom to the waterline and hardly any on the hull above the waterline. I can see the water line pretty clearly cause the boat is stored in a slip during the summer(according to current owner) and it hasn't been cleaned yet.

What would cause it to be just below the water line and none above it(impact cracks?). If it's stored in the water how much water has gotten in the fiberglass(dark lines). Should I calmly walk away from this. I know the boat needs some work like vinyl. That's ok cause I do interior restoration on cars. I just hate messing with fiberglass.

Re: Stress cracks

I would walk away. We have owned 3 Searays and never seen that many stress cracks. Fiberglass will absolutely absorb water and with the cracks that you are mentioning , why take a chance.

Re: Stress cracks

It could just be gel coat crazing, but at lakegeorge said, why take the chance. It's a buyers market right now, another will surely come along.

Re: Stress cracks

Are you sure they aren't blisters? I think blisters are bad, but you might have a condition that screams even worse and that is 'wet', wherein the wet is behind the gel.

Be rational here: Because it is only where the boat sat in the water, what you have is saturation. The glass or gel is separating and/or the wet structure is revealing its weakness.

Consider the hull trash.

Thanks for all the replies, My wife and I are gonna pass on this one, from what I've been reading in these forums, it sounds like the hull is probably water logged, That is a bigger project than I want but I can tell you where to find a 1985 Sea Ray Monaco 21' for a cheap price, The interior is in good condition.

Re: Stress cracks

the 85 rays are easy to come by cheap....look for a garage kept boat.....the stress cracks (crazing) you are talking about come from different reasons......none of which you want anything to do with
