Can anyone help me out with the Johnson Seahorse 25 hp Serial number (from medallion on motor): E36L2747. I would appreciate someone telling me what I bought, model and year etc.. I wanted a 2 stroke for weight issues and got this 25hp thinking that it should really push my boat since I was unhappy with the 5 hp. I boat tested it today (after I paid) and it really was no faster than my 5hp at WOT. I like this motor with the electric start but I really think something is wrong with it as I should get it on plane with two people on the boat. It was very impressive in the tank when the seller demonstrated it for me and revs really high in neutral, but when I put it in gear everything changes and it runs and sounds like my 5hp. Could the gear system bog it down so much or should I look at the coils? My wife must think I am a real sucker and shouldn't buy used anything.

Model number please. Running in a tank tells nothing, other than it will run. Always run on a boat with a normal load.

Oh, and don't rev it high in neutral unless you're wearing a flack jacket, helmet and face protection BC some parts may come out and bite you.

This is an old motor and all I can find is the medallion on the block which is the serial number. Where else can I look for the model number. If it is not stamped it is probably gone.

Konichiwa Mushashi-san. Well the bad news is you've already paid for it. The good news is that it's probably fix able. You're right that it should've gotten you up on plane. There are a few things you can check for yourself and report back to us. Try adjusting the carb, following these steps. It may be as simple as readjusting the carb's hi/lo needles.

Also, check the oil in the gearcase. Loosen the DRAIN screw a few turns and see what color the oil is. It should look like honey. Sort of a thick, amber liquid. If it's whit/foamy/looks like a milkshake, the you've got water getting into the lower unit. You can also remove the spark plugs and test for spark. You should get a nice blue spark with a snapping sound. It should be able to jump 1/4" gap. Let us know what you find.

you can/should definitely check the coils. I would also replace the points, condensers, and s'plug wires while you're at it. Costs less than $30 and you'll have a virtually new ignition system, which I think may be the culprit, assuming the carb is ok. May be dropping a cylinder. Check the compression, of course, while you're at it too. If the comp. is ok, pretty much everything else can be fixed.

It's funny but 2 stroke 25hp are really hard to find in Jacksonville Florida, everytime I mention boat testing the motor is sold before I show up.

I appreciate the encouragement and will check spark and carb. If I can find the parts for $30 I will very happy. Thank you!

That's generally true for all small motors everywhere.

Now I know why, if I had boat tested it I wouldn't have bought it. Guess I learned something, I feel like "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me"

Hello again mushashi. I'm right down the road in Tallahassee. The reason these motors get snatched up so quickly is because of their ease of use and maintenance. Once you get the hang of them you'll be able to fix virtually any OMC (Jonson/Evinrude/Gale) motors from the mid5d's to the mid 50's to the mid 70's. The fact that it's "old" is actually a good thing b/c you can probably fix nearly everything on it your self, unlike many modern 4-strokes. Look up "tune up kit" for your year/make and model of your motor right here at iboats in the marine storee. It will include 2 sets of points, 2 condensers for about $25. That along with some new 7mm copper core sparkplug wires for about $3 a foot and you'll have a virtually new ignition. May as well get a carb rebuild kit and waterpump too for about $25 a piece, but for under $100 you will have replaced all of the consumable parts, tuned-up the motor, dialed in the carb and learned a lot. Well worth the investment. I'm actually looking for a good 20-25hp of my own. Here's a couple great links you should check out. You'll learn tons and they can walk you throug everything you'll need to do. Good luck. Keep us posted, and of course we love pics ;)

Well I pulled out the spark plugs and only top plug sparks, both plugs smell of gas and the bottom plug was wet. I ordered 2 coils and will get wires from Napa. The guy I bought the motor from told me he just got the points and condensers replaced I guess I'll find out when I pull the flywheel. I just have to get the specs (torques, points and plug gaps) and wait for the mailman. I hope you know that I appreciate your point of view and I'll get my tinny to plane soon.

The points are set to .020" make sure they're nice and clean. Champion J6C plugs will work fine. Make sure you twist your new s'plug wires on to the coils rather than just jamming them on there too. You'll be amazed what a difference they'll all make. She'll start with 1/2 a pull or one tap of the start button and she'll be purring like a kitten and you won't have to worry about it again for years. Money well spent and you know it will be done right b/c you'll do it yourself. Good luck.
