i just bought an 81 monark with the stringer 400 drive which is completely shot and missing parts. ive got a complete 77 boat (cracked block) with the stringer 800 electric shift. my question is, is it possible to convert the 400 mechanicle to the 800 electric since i have all the electronics to go with the swap? also i do understand the gear ratio difference but think i can prop it down to help abit with that. thanks for any info

Re: stringer 400 to stringer 800?

well there's technically no "800 electric", but yes, a 1977 electric shift drive will hang on the back and the ball gears will mesh properly etc. if the 1977 drive is low profile. (1964-1977 OMC Sterndrives came in two "lengths". The high profile being 4" longer than the short.
All 1978-1985 mechanical 400 and 800 stringers were the same height as earlier "low profile" electric stringers.)
You'll just need to goop the hole shut a bit where the electric wires go through the larger cable hole in the intermediate.
