Stringer 800; gear set next to ball gears?

What is the little gearset next to the ball gears on the 800? I assume they don't need to be timed in any way, right?

Why do the manuals make such a big deal of marking which ball gear teeth on the intermediate matched up with the upper gear set so they can be put back together with the same relationship?...ball gears seem to be the most forgiving type of gears in the world.

Can any damage be done to the outdrive (it's off the boat now) by turning the upper gear set's ball gear in backwards rotation? I'm not sure which way my engine rotates, but I'm assuming it's "standard". Now that the drive is off the boat, and I can shift it from forward to reverse by pulling on the loose shift cable ends, I can't tell which drive ball gear rotation would be the way it was while it was on the boat. I just don't want to do more damage to my outdrive by spinning in the wrong way if it hurts it.

Thanks, Jay in Seattle

I am assuming that you're talking about the steering gears......and...the wear pattern on ball gear should tell you which way it turns.....it wont hurt it to turn it either wa by hand....and....ball gears will wear out..if worn gears are put together different than they were taken apart, they will wear faster...hope this helps
