yes, if you change the lower unit and shift cable, shift converter, and add an ESA system.

OMC did that themselves quite a bit in 1982-1984. The warranty fix for a bad hydro lower, was to replace it with mechanical and add the ESA.

I didn't ask if I asked how so all I need is the shift converter and the ESA ? I've got the lower

Now what's the ESA whats it look like and where is it can you still buy them and are they expensive

So if I put on the mech lower hook it into the mech shift converter and install a ESA it will be basically a newer mechanical shift

Re: Stringer conversion

If you install a full mechanical drive on your hydro-mechanical upper, you need the mechanical shift cable and the mechanical shift converter with all of it's ESA electronics. That being said, there are things that can be done to your hydro-mechanical lower that modify it somewhere in between without having to go to the lengths above. I do not know the details of this modification but I know an old time OMC dealer/mechanic who does. Problem is, for you, he is in Portland Oregon.

Re: Stringer conversion

I have seen a couple of the old dealer conversion kits on ebay from time to time. I have no idea of the part number or what to search for though.. I looked under SD accessories on shop.evinrude.com... don't see the kit there anymore. I'm sure it's listed on that site somewhere.
ESA still available... it looks like this:

not sure about shift converter parts or what specifically is needed to switch the converter from one type of shift cable to the other one. I know the shifting will be backwards if you swap lowers and don't swap or modify converter box where the cable attaches.

I did mine 5 years ago . There is a site that lets you copy instructions on how to adjust everything I can't remember it now but I will PM you the information. I found the complete conversion kit on E BAY for about $200.00 but everything was there complete with instructions i'll add that too.
