Finally got transom done for the most part on a starcraft 16. Not sure how to lay up new stringers. Was thinking of cutting off & grinding down original woven sides to hull. Then lay one whole length woven over entire stringer, bringing it out say 6 to 8 inches on each side. Maybe that would be overkill since it will be done with epoxy? Any thoughts or suggestions on how to go about this the right way? Any help is always appreciated.
http://xs.to/xs.php?f=DSCN0196.JPG&h=xs70&d=06090
http://xs.to/xs.php?f=DSCN0199.JPG&h=xs70&d=06090
http://xs.to/xs.php?f=DSCN0197.JPG&h=xs70&d=06090

Re: Stringer ? for chinewalker & all

Hi Brian,
I used the cut-down woven that was still attached to the hull as a base anchor and placement guide. I puddled thickened epoxy in the channel and seated the new stringer into that. I then ran several layers of heavy cloth up each side of the stringers, running it out into the floor about 6-8 inches. I also tied it into the transom the same way.
One design mod I made was to bring keel all the way to the transom, with an arc cut out down low to access the drain plug. I did not replace the keel all the way forward, as I didn't want to remove the kickboard area up front. It was in good shape that far forward, so I butted the replaced part of the keel into the original part, using scarf blocks screwed and glued into either side to tie them together.
I haven't done much to my 18 of late, although I did a bit of work on getting the deck seperated from the hull a few weeks ago. Still have a ways to go, but making progress. Mostly engine work this past weekend...
- Scott

Hey Brian,

I have no advice for the fiberglass, but thought it'd be a good time to mention that what you have done so far looks fantastic!

Be sure to post more pics as you progress.

Maybe a gentleman's wager would help to speed up Scott's restoration.. ie. who's gonna be done first...lol

Hello,
Scott, i really like the idea of tying the keel into the transom. I'll be doing the same here. I wasn't sure about cutting down & using the old woven sides with all the waves & gaps. After looking back at your page, the old stuff should look a lot more workable once i get it trimmed down closer to the hull.
I read about the rusty deck screw troubles on your 18. Drilling those out can't be fun.
Thanks again.

Amd,
Appreciate the encouragment. This is the first time i've dug this deep into a boat & done anything with fiberglass. So far so good, thanks from all the help here.

Re: Stringer ? for chinewalker & all

I have no doubt that Brian wil be done first. Last year I was REALLY motivated to get the 15 done, as I had sold the other 15 and had no boat. My 14-foot tin can wasn't going to cut it. Now that I've got a boat to use, the 18 is getting done at the "want" a boat pace, not the "need" a boat pace. Plus, I don't yet have a powerplant for the new boat yet, nor the funds in the kitty for it. . I know what I want and will find one when the time comes - an early 1990s narrow profile Johnrude V4 will be the preferred power...

As for the gaps and such, I wasn't really worried about them too much. I ground out the worst of them, but left the smaller ones. The boat lasted 30 years with them the first time around and I rebuilt it using better materials, better adhesives, and more attention to detail, so even with some lumps and bumps it's better than new. I could have spent a lot more time and money on redoing it, but I feel the final result would have only been marginally better at best.

- Scott
